Frequently asked questions
About the NS Wandelingen and how Trail Tally works.
- What are the NS Wandelingen ("NS Walks")?
- The NS Wandelingen ('NS Walks') are 46 official signposted walking routes published by Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch national railway. Each walk starts and ends at a railway station or public-transport stop, so you can reach the trailhead by train and walk back to a station at the end.
- How many NS Walks are there?
- There are 46 official NS Wandelingen, jointly published by NS and Wandelnet. Together they cover more than 600 kilometres of signposted routes across all twelve Dutch provinces.
- Which is the most beautiful NS Walk?
- Tastes differ, but frequently named favourites are the Kennemerduinen (coastal dunes between Santpoort and Zandvoort), Valkenburg aan de Geul (the hills of South Limburg) and Hierdense Poort (Veluwe). On Trail Tally you can keep your own per-walk rating and sort by it.
- What does an NS Walk cost?
- The route descriptions themselves are free to download via NS.nl and Wandelnet. You only pay for your train ride to the start station and back — a day return or off-peak (Dal) discount is usually cheapest.
- Can I walk an NS route in reverse?
- Technically yes, but the yellow signposting only runs in one direction. To go the other way you'll have to navigate yourself using the GPX track. Most walkers find it easier to follow the marked direction.
- Is Trail Tally affiliated with NS?
- No. Trail Tally is an independent fan project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen). All route information is provided for personal, non-commercial use.
- How much does Trail Tally cost?
- Trail Tally is free to use. There are no ads, no trackers, and no paid tier.
- Do I need an account?
- No. You can mark walks as completed without signing in — progress is stored in your browser. Creating a free account syncs your progress across devices and prevents you losing it if you clear your browser data.
- How long are the walks?
- The 46 NS Walks together cover roughly 600 km. Individual walks range from about 8 km to over 20 km. Each walk page on Trail Tally shows the exact distance and difficulty.
- Are dogs allowed?
- Most walks are dog-friendly, but several cross nature reserves where dogs are not permitted or must be leashed at all times. Every walk page shows the dog policy as documented by NS.
- Can I download the routes as GPX?
- Yes. Each walk page links to the official NS detail page and, where available, the Wandelnet GPX/route download. Trail Tally does not redistribute the route files itself.
- Which data does Trail Tally store?
- If you sign in: your email, hashed password (or Google OAuth identifier), and the walks you've marked complete with optional dates, ratings, notes, and photo URLs. Nothing is sold or shared. See the Privacy Policy for details.
- How do I delete my account?
- Open the Account page while signed in and use 'Delete my account'. Your account and all walk progress are removed permanently.
