Description

Leeuwarden was the European Capital of Culture in 2018. And for good reason, of course. Leeuwarden's Hofstad past makes the city unique compared to other historic city centers. Hofsteden are known as cities with a historic city center offering a rich cultural program, welcoming hospitality, and a vibrant shopping heart. Exactly what you'll find in Leeuwarden!

This walk starts and ends at Leeuwarden station. The route through the monumental city is 6.5 km long and passes the Stadhouderlijk Hof (residence of the Royal Family until 1971), the beautiful Prinsentuin pleasure garden of the Frisian Nassaus, canals, and the stump Oldenhove. There are many unique shops and numerous restaurants.

Route

Do you prefer to walk longer and also look outside the city? Then extend the walk by about 6 km through Leeuwarden's former green agricultural and horticultural areas. You'll walk along the Potmarge, an old waterway designated as a protected monument. This way, you get a beautiful combination of the city and its lovely surroundings.
