Overijsselse Buitenplaatsen

BrummenZutphen

Cortenoever is a tiny village in the municipality of Brummen. This is where the IJssel floodplains, a Staatsbosbeheer nature reserve, begin. From the old dike, you look straight into the floodplains. You can extend the route with a 4 km 'Boots Path', right through a nature reserve. Please be mindful of the breeding season!

Description

From the station, you first walk through small Brummen, with monumental buildings and pleasant outdoor cafes. Shortly after, the IJssel floodplains are already at your feet. As you follow the old dike from south to north, you can enjoy expansive views.

As part of the 'Room for the River' project, this dike was recently lowered so that water can flow freely in and out. Houses and farms even had to disappear to make way for the water. Incidentally, the area only floods during very high water levels, and that happens at most once every 25 years.

Because the route is so varied, you hardly realize that the surface is paved. Would you also like to walk on unpaved paths? You can extend the route halfway with a 'Boots Path', right through a nature reserve, where the floodplains are at their most beautiful!

At the end of the route, you walk 2 km through the floodplains (in case of high water, there is an alternative route). Finally, you reach historic Zutphen, where you won't have enough time.

Route

The hike goes from Brummen station to Zutphen and is 14 km long. There are no options to shorten the route along the way. You can extend the route by 3.5 km halfway by following a 'Boots Path' (can be marshy!).
