Description
This walk perfectly embodies Twente! The landscape varies from historic city centers to winding streams and authentic farmhouses.
Via the 18th-century Werkmanshuisjes on the Herengracht and Huize Almelo, a country estate of the Van Rechteren Limpurg family, you leave Almelo on the east side. Almelo is located in a low-lying area where many streams converge. You first follow the Loolee, one of the larger streams. Further on, you walk along the Oude Bornsche Beek. This stream has been given more space and now meanders beautifully through the landscape.
Along the way, you pass the former country estate Weleveld, where only the moat, restored in 1994, still reminds of the estate. Via the Deurningerbeek, you enter Borne. After the new development, you enter the old part of Borne, which is now a protected village scape. Borne was an important center in the textile industry in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Route
The route starts at Almelo station and ends after more than 17 km at Borne station; you can shorten the route to 13 km. There are few catering establishments along the way.
